Nikon torna alle origini.

Una macchina che strizza l’occhio alla tradizione, in particolare la somiglianza è evidentissima con  la FM2, grande macchina storica della casa giallo nera.

Le forme, le ghiere, sono quelle. Le dimensioni sono più abbondanti.

Cambia anche la baionetta, in questo caso troviamo la baionetta Z, la nuova baionetta Nikon pensa per il mondo mirrorless.

Nikon goes back to its roots. A camera that nods to tradition, especially in its very evident resemblance to the FM2, a great historic camera from the yellow and black brand.

The shapes, the dials, are those. The dimensions are more generous. The bayonet mount also changes, in this case, we find the Z mount, Nikon's new bayonet designed for the mirrorless world.

Una delle macchine digitali più belle degli ultimi anni. In un’epoca di standarzizzazione assoluta, dove le mirrorless si somigliano un po’ tutte, finalmente un omaggio alla tradizione che rompe un po’ gli schemi. Bentornate ghiere fisiche. Che permettono di avere tutto sott’occhio e rendono tutto più intuitivo.   Un piccolo disappunto è stato quello di trovare la scelta della modalità espositiva ( PASM ) separata rispetto alle suddette ghiere. Sarebbe stato meglio avere una coerenza assoluta, da questo punto di vista. Naturalmente ci sono anche le ghiere moderne a portata di pollice e indice, come da tradizione Nikon, che consentono di poter lavorare in maniera più “digitale” e anche più rapida. Libertà assoluta di scegliere l’operatività che meglio si confà alle proprie esigenze, quindi.

One of the most beautiful digital cameras in recent years. In an era of absolute standardization, where mirrorless cameras all look somewhat similar, finally a tribute to tradition that breaks the mold. Welcome back, physical dials. They allow everything to be at a glance and make everything more intuitive. A slight disappointment was finding the exposure mode selection (PASM) separated from the said dials. It would have been better to have absolute consistency in this regard. Naturally, there are also modern dials within thumb and forefinger reach, as per Nikon tradition, which allow for a more "digital" and quicker operation. Absolute freedom to choose the operability that best suits one's needs, then.

Mirino e monitor.

La qualità del mirino, incassato nella parte superiore della macchina in modo tale da ricordare la presenza di specchio e pentaprisma d’annata, è straordinaria. Una chiarezza di visione che ritroviamo solo in macchine di fascia molto più elevata e con molti più megapixel di risoluzione ( qui abbiamo 3,6 mp, una risoluzione più che adeguata ). Un unico difetto è l’effetto scia se usiamo la macchina in movimento. Piuttosto fastidioso. Cioè si nota un “effetto trascinamento” dei pixel. Probabilmente dovuto ad una non elevatissima frequenza di aggiornamento ( è dichiarato per 60 fps ). Molto buona anche la qualità del display posteriore, che è snodabile a 360 gradi. Permettendo anche dei comodissimi selfie.  Peccato però che non sia possibile averlo in asse alla macchina quando vogliamo utilizzarlo per riprese dal basso o dall’alto. Questo tipo di articolazione del display è molto comodo per i vari content creator ed operatori video, ma completamente inutilizzabile per chi ne fa un uso prettamente fotografico e dinamico: nella street photography è pressoché inutile.   Cara Nikon, questo tipo di display sarebbe stato perfetto sulla prossima Nikon Z6 Mark 3, macchina full frame dall’approccio moderno e generalista,  non su una macchina che richiama palesemente il tuo retaggio fotografico. Gran peccato.

The quality of the viewfinder, embedded at the top of the camera in such a way as to recall the presence of a mirror and vintage pentaprism, is outstanding. A clarity of vision that we find only in much higher-end cameras with many more megapixels of resolution (here we have 3.6 mp, a more than adequate resolution). A single flaw is the motion blur effect when using the camera on the move. Rather annoying. That is, a "drag effect" of the pixels is noticeable, probably due to a not very high refresh rate (it is declared at 60 fps). The quality of the rear display, which is rotatable 360 degrees, is also very good. Allowing for very comfortable selfies. However, it's a pity that it cannot be aligned with the camera when wanting to use it for low or high shots. This type of display articulation is very convenient for various content creators and video operators but completely unusable for those who use it purely for photographic and dynamic use: in street photography, it's almost useless. Dear Nikon, this type of display would have been perfect on the next Nikon Z6 Mark 3, a full-frame camera with a modern and generalist approach, not on a camera that clearly recalls your photographic heritage. A great pity.

Ergonomia e piacevolezza d’uso.

Ergonomics and User Experience.

Come già accennato precedentemente la libertà operativa è assoluta: potete scegliere di lavorare alla vecchia maniera o in maniera completamente “digitale”. Sta a voi. Democratica.

Si tratta di una macchina che pone sul piatto, oltre ad un’estetica fantastica, anche un aspetto fondamentale: la piacevolezza d’uso. Termine un po’ fumoso che racchiude un insieme di fattori ben amalgamati tra di loro. Un’ottima velocità operativa, semplicità d’uso, intuitiva e con una curva di apprendimento molto breve e lineare, un sistema autofocus a dir poco eccellente ed un sistema manual focus sorprendentemente efficace…

Insomma un insieme di elementi che rendono estremamente piacevole e divertente e appagante scattare con la Zf. Un gioiello. In un mondo sempre più omologato è una macchina con una sua personalità ben precisa. Divertente e piacevolissima. Chapeau.  La dimostrazione che non servono milioni di tasti personalizzabili. Serve solo pensare a posizione bene quelli giusti.

Unico piccolo neo: il grip aggiuntivo può migliorare la presa per chi ha mani molto grandi. Nel mio caso l’anulare della mano destra spesso finiva sul pulsante personalizzabile posto anteriormente. Problema risolto, appunto, col il grip opzionale.

As previously mentioned, the operational freedom is absolute: you can choose to work in the old-fashioned way or in a completely "digital" manner. It's up to you. Democratic. It is a camera that offers, in addition to fantastic aesthetics, also a fundamental aspect: the pleasure of use. A somewhat vague term that encompasses a set of well-blended factors. Excellent operational speed, ease of use, intuitive and with a very short and straightforward learning curve, an autofocus system that is nothing short of excellent, and a surprisingly effective manual focus system... In short, a set of elements that make shooting with the Zf extremely enjoyable and satisfying. A gem. In an increasingly standardized world, it is a camera with a very distinct personality. Fun and very pleasant. Hats off. The demonstration that millions of customizable buttons are not needed. Just need to think about positioning the right ones correctly. The only small flaw: the additional grip can improve the grip for those with very large hands. In my case, the ring finger of the right hand often ended up on the customizable button placed at the front. Problem solved, indeed, with the optional grip.

Autofocus and Metering.

Eccellenza in entrambi i casi. L’autofocus poi è il più sensibile mai visto in condizioni di scarsa illuminazione. In condizioni di basso contrasto e illuminazione svolge il suo lavoro come nessun altro. Straordinario. Da attivare un’opzione apposita nel menù per lavorare alla massima sensibilità  possibile, del modulo AF. Tracking, riconoscimento oggetti e riconoscimento viso\occhi, sono all’altezza della migliore concorrenza. Spesso anche un filino meglio.   Esposimetro preciso, inappuntabile. Come Nikon sa fare.

Excellence in both cases. The autofocus is the most sensitive ever seen in low light conditions. In conditions of low contrast and lighting, it performs its job like no other. Extraordinary. An option in the menu needs to be activated to work with the maximum possible sensitivity of the AF module. Tracking, object recognition, and face/eye recognition are up to the best competition. Often even a bit better. The metering is precise, impeccable. As Nikon knows how to do.

Autonomia.

Battery Life.

Seppure non straordinaria regala un’intera giornata di scatti senza alcun problema. 800\1000 scatti a batteria si fanno senza remore.

Although not extraordinary, it offers a full day of shooting without any problem. 800/1000 shots per battery can be done without hesitation..

Qualità d’immagine.

Image Quality.

A basse, medie, alte ed altissime sensibilità ISO la qualità d’immagine è sempre elevatissima.  Ottima gamma dinamica, ottima malleabilità dei file su Capture One. JPEG eccellenti con alcune chicche davvero notevoli, come il trattamento della pelle. Esemplare. La risoluzione non è elevatissima, ma 24 mp sono ampiamente sufficienti a qualsiasi esigenza reale. Compreso il poter ritagliare e poter comunque stampare in grandi dimensioni senza problemi.

At low, medium, high, and very high ISO sensitivities, the image quality is always very high. Excellent dynamic range, great malleability of files in Capture One. Excellent JPEGs with some really notable features, like skin treatment. Exemplary. The resolution is not very high, but 24 mp are more than enough for any real need. Including being able to crop and still print in large sizes without problems.

Sul Campo.

In the Field.

La Nikon Zf si è dimostrata una macchina eccezionale. Rapida, efficace, con qualità d’immagine eccellente. Quello che però sorprende è una caratteristica spesso sottovalutata. La piacevolezza d’uso. Non è una questione di mera estetica, ma di tutta una lunga serie di caratteristiche che ben si amalgamano tra di loro.  La messa a fuoco manuale - con d’ottiche dotate di chip - è semplicemente la migliore viste sulle mirroless ad ottiche intercambiabile. Non c’è bisogno di ingrandimento o di peaking. Semplicemente la macchine riconosce gli occhi ( se si sta facendo un ritratto ) ed illumina di verde  il quadratino dell’a messa a fuoco sull'occhio messo a fuoco correttamente. Altrimenti illumina di verde il punto di messa a fuoco utilizzato nel momento in cui si raggiunge la messa a fuoco perfetta in quel punto. In questo modo non si perde mai la visione d’insieme del fotogramma e non si è distratti dal peaking. Funziona anche con le varie tipologie di riconoscimento oggetti o animali. Lavorare così in manual focus è una vera manna.

Stesso discorso in autofocus. Tutto molto semplice, lineare, veloce ed efficace.  Le ghiere aggiungono una fisicità ed una visione d’insieme dei parametri espositivi fondamentali decisamente intelligente. I diaframmi vengono visualizzati nella piccola finestrella sulla calotta superiore, nel caso si utilizzino ottiche senza ghiera di diaframmi di ultima generazione. L’otturatore non presenta alcun lag alla risposta e vanta un suono piacevole e discreto.

Eccezionale lo stabilizzatore d’immagine. Davvero comodissimo. Unico neo: con ottiche di terze parte risulta efficace per circa 3 stop, contro i 6 stop con un’ottica nativa media. Peccato.

In conclusione una macchina spettacolare, con una qualità d’immagine straordinaria. I pochi difetti sono abbastanza marginali e non inficiano un’esperienza d’uso ottima.

The Nikon Zf has proven to be an exceptional camera. Quick, effective, with excellent image quality. However, what surprises is often an underappreciated feature. The pleasure of use. It's not just a matter of mere aesthetics, but of a whole series of characteristics that blend well with each other. Manual focusing - with chip-equipped lenses - is simply the best seen on mirrorless with interchangeable lenses. No need for magnification or peaking. Simply, the camera recognizes the eyes (if you're taking a portrait) and lights up the focus square on the correctly focused eye in green. Otherwise, it lights up the focus point used at the moment when perfect focus is achieved in that spot in green. This way, you never lose the overall view of the frame and are not distracted by peaking. It also works with various types of object or animal recognition. Working this way in manual focus is a real boon. The same goes for autofocus. Everything is very simple, straightforward, fast, and effective. The dials add a physicality and an overall view of the essential exposure parameters that is quite intelligent. The aperture settings are displayed in the small window on the top cap, in case lenses without the latest generation aperture dials are used. The shutter has no lag in response and boasts a pleasant and discreet sound. The image stabilizer is exceptional. Very handy. The only downside: with third-party lenses, it is effective for about 3 stops, against 6 stops with a native medium lens. A pity. In conclusion, a spectacular camera, with extraordinary image quality. The few flaws are quite marginal and do not affect an excellent user experience.

Scelta dei colori della simil pelle del corpo macchina molto sfiziosa.

Difetti

Il display orientabile, non in asse con la macchina, rende estremamente complessa un certo tipo di fotografia dinamica usando il monitor stesso. Essendo una macchina fotografica principalmente dedicata alla fotografia, mi sarei aspettato più attenzione a questo aspetto.

Il mirino - ottimo - presenta  un effetto trascinamento dei pixel quando si fotografa in maniera molto dinamica.

Il pulsante anteriore personalizzabile può finire sotto l’anulare, se il fotografo ha mani piuttosto grandi. Problema risolto con il grip aggiuntivo.

Alcune voci del menù possono generare confusione, non sono molto chiare.

Cons

The rotatable display, not aligned with the camera, makes a certain type of dynamic photography using the monitor itself extremely complex. Being a camera mainly dedicated to photography, I would have expected more attention to this aspect.

The viewfinder - excellent - presents a pixel dragging effect when photographing in a very dynamic way.

The front customizable button may end up under the ring finger if the photographer has rather large hands. Problem solved with the additional grip.

Some menu items can create confusion; they are not very clear.

My Personal Recommendation.

Un’ottica da non perdere assolutamente su questa macchina fotografica è il 40 f1.2 Voigtlander Z.

Resa esemplare, nitida, con una pasta molto poetica. Imperdibile. E con queste facilitazioni nella messa a fuoco manuale è un vero piacere utilizzarlo.Dimensioni compatte ed un’apertura massima elevatissima ( f1.2 ) ne fanno un’accoppiata strepitosa in bassa luce.

Per questa recensione ho utilizzato il Voigtlander 50 f2.0 Apo, altrettanto eccezionale, na con un’aspetto più “clinico”, seppur ancora già performante dal punto di vista delle prestazioni ottiche.

A lens you absolutely must not miss on this camera is the 40 f1.2 Voigtlander Z. Exemplary performance, sharp, with a very poetic quality. Unmissable. And with these manual focusing aids, it's a real pleasure to use it. Compact dimensions and a very high maximum aperture (f1.2) make it a spectacular combination in low light. For this review, I used the Voigtlander 50 f2.0 Apo, equally exceptional, but with a more "clinical" aspect, albeit still highly performing from an optical performance standpoint.
